When we started Recovery Direct’s rehabilitation facility, we first sought to identify the factors involved in actual recovery and then enlist the services if five professionals who could assist people struggling with substance use disorders find long term recovery and help to establish a world-leading recovery programme.
What we unfortunately found, however, was that these “recovery professionals” were not, in fact, registered or experienced counsellors but a number of suspect referral services that simply directed people to the drug rehabs in Johannesburg. These addiction referral services are seemingly paid by specific rehabs to send patients to their rehabilitation centre facilities as opposed to other legitimate avenues of treatment.
This is a commercial bias that favours rehab centres that were prepared to pay for patient admissions. In this case, very little attention is paid to the needs of the person concerned. The inevitable result is that many patients may not receive high value or treatment focus that they need to recover.
As a first step into recovery, this process for clinical admission is obviously deeply flawed; In an industry where the “customer” is could well have a life-threatening condition, it is in our view both unethical and irresponsible.
In establishing Recovery Direct we spent a great deal of time constructing a true recovery programme and team that placed 100% of the focus on what is objectively best for the individuals that see us for private consultations or that are admitted into treatment.
This process you can read about here in detail, however, in summary, it is designed to ensure that people admitted to our centre in Johannesburg are admitted because
- do they have legitimate cause to be admitted, or is this an invalid self-diagnosis?
- is the individual seeking and requiring treatment, or is this a forced process?
- can we can establish who is best poised to provide the required help in our centre?
- what kind of treatment we provide will work best for them as individuals?
- will we be able to provide sufficient counselling time to meaningfully assist the individual?
Consequently, Recovery Direct does not use these “middle man” agency services and in many circumstances will refer patients (without commission) to other facilities or private service providers that may be better suited to handle the individual case than we would.
All admissions into our rehab centres in South Africa are managed by our team of employed registered counsellor professionals in South Africa who have no personal or commercial interest in admitting or not admitting a person for treatment in our centre.
The treatment needs to work for everyone.
If patients do not want/require admission to our rehabilitation centres or are not suited for some reason, we simply advise them on the best course of action to pursue. These assessments take up valuable counselling time which is why we charge for them, however, the cost may be well worth it specifically in cases where people do not need to be admitted for residential treatment. An unbiased, professional opinion could save you tens of thousands of rands.
Why admit a patient to a rehabilitation centre as opposed to joining a Narcotics or Alcoholics Anonymous group?
12 Step addiction treatment centres provide little more than what addicts and alcoholics gain from visiting the freely available alcoholics anonymous or narcotics anonymous groups and meetings. The anonymous groups do provide substantial support to long-term recovery in patients. However, they do not always cater for the initial phases of breaking active addiction.
There are also many archaic principles 12 step recovery perpetuate the process and can result in ongoing relapse if the underlying causes of the addiction are not dealt with upfront.
One of these underlying causes is trauma.
Recovery Direct was formulated to address the fundamental shortfalls in dealing with addiction in the context of past trauma resolution.
