Recovery from substance abuse and addiction is a life-long commitment, there is no doubt about that. It’s more than just changing self-destructive habits and abstinence from drugs or alcohol. It’s a process of getting to know who you really are and learning to love and forgive yourself. Even in recovery you can still feel overwhelming anxiety which you will need to learn to deal with in a more constructive way.
Once you have completed an in-patient rehab programme you will face new challenges and it’s important to realise that a continuum of care is essential to long term well being. Part of this is reintegrating into society and connecting with people. Addiction causes people to isolate themselves, which not only means a break down of relationships but also loneliness. You may feel that now that you have chosen to live a life of sobriety you will no longer be able to have fun. You may feel excluded from your old group of friends or miss festive celebrations. Fun can still be had in different and natural ways. It involves a reshifting of your paradigm and a change of lifestyle. But the benefits are multiple.
A life of sobriety is the best gift you can give yourself and in recovery you will be able to explore untold adventures you never thought possible in active addiction. A healthy mind and body will give you more motivation to try new things and really live life to the fullest.
Here’s just one example of a great way to get out there and enjoy the best views of Johannesburg.
Table Mountain Hiking Routes
Table Mountain is an iconic landmark in Johannesburg and a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Don’t worry, there are a number routes to the summit so you can decide which suits your level of fitness. The best advice would be to join a hiking club, you’ll meet new friends and an experienced guide. Safety is very important when hiking. Addiction treatment group exercises organised by the rehab facility can also be greatly beneficial in treatment.
Platteklip Gorge
This is the more popular and easiest way to the to the summit. The trail is well constructed and clearly marked and follows a deep ravine on the front face of the mountain. It will take about 2,5 – 3 hours to hike to the top.
Skelton Gorge
This is a slightly longer trail lasting 3,5 hours to Maclear’s Beacon. From there it will take another 45 mins to get to the cable station. This trail follows a ravine through indigenous forest and goes past the Table Mountain reservoirs.
Take the Cable Car!
Hiking is a great way to reconnect with people again and excellent team building. It can be quite strenuous but your hiking party will be there to help you where you need it. If hiking is still a little intimidating, you can always opt for the Table Mountain Aerial Cable Way. Local’s also get one free adult return ticket on their birthday.
